These are trousers you can walk and sit with. The trousers are equipped with a very simple and light internal structure. This allows the wearer to walk freely and sit every second he wishes to. The structure is built in such a way that it locks every time you bend your knees. With the help of the trousers fabric you are totally supported and suspended.

it was bought by the contemporary art society for the special collection scheme together with the 501 chair that was created in the inspiration of the trousers

This work explores the relationship between elements in space and time. From the close love-relationships between lovers, family and neighbours through to the complex relationships between countries, in this work we are exploring the state of consonance.

The AI light has an artificial intelligence brain that senses space through five different sensors. Using a biologically inspired mechanism, this structure morphs and generates new behaviours according to your personal space.

When you first invite it into your home, you have to let it get accustomed to its new environment. Once it is relaxed, the training can then begin. It has five senses that track changes in its environment and slowly it develops a set of behaviours that indicate a new character to each light. The user is also able to interact with the light by playing with it through sounds, light and movements. This smart structure may behave in unpredictable ways if moved to an unfamiliar space.

The Osteon Chair is the first chair to be designed using a combination of 3D tools and artificial intelligence. Produced by EOS laser sintering the chair consists of a cosmetic skin and intelligent internal structure. Like the biological structure and mechanism of bone, the artificial intelligence software knows where to create sufficient support.

Osteon chair is an intelligent product that growing in free space with an artificial intelligence 'DNA' code. This code contains all the information required to ensure that the object will transform perfectly from a virtual design into a 3D object that achieves the optimum strength whilst maintaining the desired visual aesthetic.

The AI software used in this collaboration was designed by Dr. Siavash Mahdavi of complex matters, works rather like finite element analysis [FEA] in reverse. An ideal set of end results were formulated as the starting point and the optimal structure was created by working backwards to achieve that goal. The final AI Stool met all of the mechanical requirements while only using 1/3 of the anticipated material.

In the AI project the virtual designs were translated directly and perfectly from the 3d design environment by EOS laser sintering p700 machine. This project challenge the existing technology up to a point the we all had to update the technology by writing new codes and software.

The significance in this new way of building and designing objects is, one in the fact that we manage to optimise material usage by using 1/3 of the anticipated material. Second we develop a way to design with minimum constrains.

What was important for me was to develop a way to have a cosmetic unstructured outer skin and intelligent internal structure that you know will do the job… the outer cosmetic skin of the object is thin like the human face skin, open for the designer to be free and come up with optimised and playful design solutions.

The OMI.mgx light is one of the first products to be produced and distributed straight from the SLS (selective laser sintering) machine tank. produced entirely as a single nylon part. Its form, together with the natural flexibility of the polyamide, creates the impression of a biological mechanism. The shape can be transformed by bending or twisting the structure - twist one end and the rest will follow. This behavior offers versatility in that it can be personalized and manipulated easily to create different sculptural sensations and space and moods.

Upica sofa

Description:The Upica sofa design focuses on the tight relationship between the physical and the visual structure. This object was carefully designed to create structural strength while keeping the essential sculptural elements. The result is a thin and light structure, different from each angle you look at it.

The Upica sofa questions tradition. Technology today helps to simplify design. Alias Studio tools (3D software) gave us the right tools to restrain and simplify a five meter-long line. The Upica sofa is a composition of four lines that creates one compound surface. It is a very slim and large surface that supports itself. If a few millimetres of the surface tight shape were changed, the sofa would collapse like paper.

Tradition gives stability and comfort to the every day life. I believe that as creators of new things, we have to question design each time again and again. Do we really like the chunky armchair? If we do, why? I insist on calling the Upica sofa a sofa and not a bench. The sofa is the largest statue in the living room. Some of the thickness of the upholstery hides the mechanical structure required by an object of this scale. Today we have stress analysis software that can help us to checking the strength of an object when using the minimum amount of material. In the Upica sofa, anything unnecessary has disappeared.

In today’s technological reality, design should be seen also as a strategy for questioning and modifying traditional symbols.

The Upica sofa is made in a unique combination of GRP reinforced U-Pica Mat®. U-Pica Mat® is a low density, non woven continuous strand laminate containing approximately 45% by volume of airy micro-balloons. Together with the GRP the micro-balloons creating a solid micro structure that uses minimum material whilst achieving maximum strength.

501 Chair, The chair's shape came from an early project: trousers you can walk and sit with. This chair's function directly derivates from the initial project: This new way of sitting allows you to rest between a sitting and standing position. It looses your back from any tension and supports you when you find yourself standing for a moment talking on the telephone, having a discussion, or just thinking. It is one surface with no undercuts, constructed by one outline that modifies the surface structural strength and dictates it’s visual definition.
